Solving the Procrastination Puzzle
Procrastination delays life itself. Voluntary needless delay ends now.
productivityWhen the customers would come tomorrow for their free goods, the butcher would say, “Read the sign: Today you pay, tomorrow it’s free.” As this reader noted, it is pretty much that way with procrastination. The tomorrow in which “I’ll really feel like it” is always a day away. It never becomes today.
AQ's take: Butcher trick mirrors my procrastination scam perfectly.
Dec 20, 2023“My current motivational state does not need to match my intention in order to act.”
AQ's take: Freed me. Motivation mismatch no longer stops me cold.
Dec 20, 2023We can do something even if we do not feel like it.
AQ's take: Truth bomb. Feelings lie, action doesn't need them.
Dec 20, 2023Similarly, acknowledging that our motivational state is neither necessary nor sufficient to ensure action, we can simply remind ourselves of our personal goals (a form of self-affirmation) and “just get started.” Progress will fuel well-being and enhance goal attainment
AQ's take: Self-reminder gold. Starting fuels everything I crave.
Dec 20, 2023We are not very good at predicting how we will feel in the future. We are overly optimistic, and our optimism comes crashing down when tomorrow comes.
AQ's take: My optimism crashes predictably. Tomorrow never delivers.
Dec 20, 2023Let go of the misconception that our motivational state must match the task at hand. In fact, social psychologists have demonstrated that attitudes follow behaviors more than (or at least as much as) behaviors follow attitudes. When you start to act on your intention as intended, you will see your attitude and motivation change.
AQ's take: Attitudes follow action? Game-changer for my lazy ass.
Dec 20, 2023Our brains seem programmed to prefer immediate rewards. This stone-age brain is not so adaptive in our modern world, where we need to meet distant deadlines by doing things today.
AQ's take: Stone-age brain owns me on deadlines every time.
Dec 20, 2023For example, if we are fearful that we cannot do a task perfectly and that our self-worth depends on this perfect performance, then we may avoid the task to protect our self-esteem. We procrastinate.
AQ's take: Fear of imperfection? That's my procrastination shield busted.
Dec 20, 2023By flag or signal, I mean that as soon as we say something like “There’s lots of time, I can do this later,” it acts as a trigger or stimulus for a new response. Remember the earlier example of this as an implementation intention? IF we say “Ah, it’s not that important,” THEN we stop and remind ourselves that this is a form of self-deception, a bias in our thinking, and we just get started on the task instead.
AQ's take: IF excuse pops up, THEN start. Simple trigger genius.
Dec 20, 2023Once we start a task, it is rarely as bad as we think. Our research shows us that getting started changes our perceptions of a task. It can also change our perception of ourselves in important ways.
AQ's take: Finally proof: starting shrinks the monster task.
Dec 20, 2023What did we learn? Once we start a task, it is rarely as bad as we think. In fact, many participants made comments when we paged them during their last-minute efforts that they wished they had started earlier—the task was actually interesting, and they thought they could do a better job with a little more time.
AQ's take: Wished I started sooner too. Late rushes suck.
Dec 20, 2023The “if” part of the statement sets out some stimulus for action. The “then” portion describes the action itself. The issue here really is one of a predecision. We are trying to delegate the control over the initiation of our behavior to a specified situation without requiring conscious decision.
AQ's take: Pre-decision brilliance. No room for my weak moments.
Dec 20, 2023IF I say to myself things like “I’ll feel more like doing this later” or “I don’t feel like doing this now,” THEN I will just get started on some aspect of the task.
AQ's take: IF lazy thought hits, THEN just begin. Lifesaver.
Dec 20, 2023“A job begun is a job half done.”
AQ's take: Nails my starter's remorse. Beginnings feel like wins, but half-done haunts my ADHD brain.
Dec 20, 2023In fact, when you just cannot seem to get started on a task, get started by breaking down the task into subtasks. BUT don’t stop there, as tempting as it may be some days. It is true for many of us that after we make a list like this, we feel better and we think we have accomplished something, so we actually stop—another excuse for procrastination. Don’t forget: The purpose of that list is to get you started. Just get started.
AQ's take: Exposes my list addiction. Bullet points trick me into victory laps before touching tasks.
Dec 20, 2023Emotional intelligence is the ability to effectively identify and utilize emotions to guide behavior.
AQ's take: Emotional IQ? Mine guides me straight to the couch.
Nov 24, 2023THINK: IF I feel negative emotions when I face the task at hand, THEN I will stay put and not stop, put off a task, or run away.
AQ's take: Perfect if-then hack for my emotion-driven delays.
Nov 24, 2023We might simply think, “I’ll feel more like doing this tomorrow.” We probably won’t.
AQ's take: Tomorrow lie exposed. I fall for it every time.
Nov 24, 2023Procrastination is a needless voluntary delay.
AQ's take: Nailed my daily self-sabotage. Voluntary? Yeah, that's my stupid choice.
Nov 23, 2023Procrastination is a problem with not getting on with life itself. When we procrastinate on our goals, we are our own worst enemy. These are our goals, our tasks, and we are needlessly putting them off. Our goals are the things that make up a good portion of our lives. In fact, both philosophers and psychologists have proposed that happiness is found in the pursuit of our goals. It is not necessarily that we are accomplishing anything in particular, but that we are engaged in the pursuit of what we think is meaningful in our lives.
AQ's take: Hits hard. My goals define life, yet I block them myself.
Nov 23, 2023When we procrastinate on our goals, we are basically putting off our lives.
AQ's take: Damn. Procrastinating steals my life, not some external thief.
Nov 23, 2023To strengthen a goal intention, it is important to recognize the benefits of acting now, not just the costs of needless delay.
AQ's take: Spot on. Acting now beats endless delay costs I ignore.
